It sure was a SAFETY themed month of February! First it was the STOP if you Love me driving safe campaign, then it was the yearly Bike Education safety week for our 4th graders! First we had Mr. Mike and Mr. Jerry come into the classrooms to teach us about bicycle safety gear and the 6 point safety check! Days 2, 3, 4, and 5 were all spent outdoors on the basketball court, playground, parking lot, and nearby Aiea neighborhood. We had some beginner riders on the first day, but by day 5, they were ALL riding! Congratulations to everyone for making Bike Ed. a HUGE success!

1) My Mommy and Daddy already taught me how to ride a bike when I was 8 years old. But when I took the Bike Ed. program, I learned:
ReplyDeletea. That when I'm at an intersection, I need to walk my bike out to a spot where drivers can see me and I can see them too
b. ALWAYS use hand signals when turning or stopping
c. When I'm riding on the road, stay on my check point (which is your arm's length or 2 feet from the sidewalk)
d. Look both ways when I'm at an intersection
e. When you're going down a hill, use both back and front brakes, but don't press them too hard or you might fly over your handlebars
f. The 6 Point safety check: handlebars, tires, brakes, chain, seat and pedals
g. When riding, make sure you wear the proper gear (please see picture above)
h. About the various traffic signs and what they mean
i. Being on "the right side of the road is the right side to be on"
2) My favorite part of Bike Ed was when we rode from campus, onto the bridge over the highway, through the Aiea neighborhood, passed the Aiea Public Library and we ended up on the baseball field at Aiea High School. That was fun and challenging for me at the same time.
During the Bike Education week with Hawaii Bicycle League I learned a lot of things:
ReplyDelete1. I learned the 6-point safety check to see if the bike is good to ride. We check the brakes to see if they work, the handle bars to see if its tight enough and not too loose, the tires for good amount of air, the bike seat to see if its secured so I can sit on it, the chain to see if it on the bike properly, and the pedals to see if they spin correctly as the tires move.
2. My favorite part of Bike Ed. was when we rode our bikes on the road to practice bike safety with Mr. Mike. It was my favorite because we learned how to make U-turns and check for cars when crossing or riding on the streets. It made me feel safe when I know all these safety rules and I can remember them when I ride my own bike with my family.
Thank you, Brooke and Mason, for commenting on the Bike Ed. posting. I'm so proud of you and your classmates for being SAFE and ALERT while on the street with Mr. Mike, Mr. Mick, and Mr. Jerry! You sure showed them (and me) how attentive you are as SAFE bike riders! Congratulations on a job well done! ;-)
ReplyDelete1:At bike ed I learned my six point safety check because some times I forget to check my bike because when they said what happens when you don't check the brakes, handle, seats, tires, pedals, and the chain you might get hurt but now i know to always check your bike before riding.

Alyssa, I'm glad that you realized how important it is to check your bike before riding it! It's a good habit! I have to do it too, even if it's just a ride around the block a few times. Safety is a MUST! Aloha, Mrs. Wong

ReplyDeleteJu-Won, what was your favorite part about Bike Ed?
DeleteI'm sorry that you got hurt on the 2nd to the last day of the program. I hope you now realize that you need to follow the rules of riding a bike safely. When you were told to slow down and use your brakes, you neglected that rule and ended up hurting yourself. Listen carefully in and out of the classroom. Thanks for participating!
Aloha, Mrs. Wong
I learned that riding a bike is fun but you should be aware of your surroundings and I think that that is a fun time to spend but at the same time I think we got to do our tribe agreements. I think we did safety and attentive listening. I also think this was fun because I never got to ride a bike.
