Did you get a full night's rest?  At least 10 hours for YOU (students)! :) I made sure I got my 8 hours of rest so I can stay healthy and alert as well.

Distance Learning Day 1

Monday, March 30, 2020, 5:10pm HST.

Greetings Students!

My sincere apologies for getting my "suggested distance learning schedule" up so LATE!
If you don't get to do the specific lessons I post on this blog, or email to your parents,
don't worry....just continue to do the BASIC enrichment learning:

1.  iReady (reading and math)
2.  IXL (math concepts) *optional to do other 2nd grade items listed on IXL
3.  KidBizz3000 (1 lesson per session)
4.  Reading (use Capstone or PebbleGo)


Be sure to set a Kindness goal for the week.
I know a few of you may NOT have your kindness project file folder.  That's fine.  Simply use a piece of folder paper, printer paper, or a composition book, to jot down a kindness goal you will work on this week.  If you need suggestions, ask me, or ask your parents!  Then on Friday, you will reflect on your goal.  I will have the reflection questions posted for you to reflect on.

We're All In This Together...

Aloha Everyone!
It's been a while (2 years) since I've used this link.
I am grateful that this is one way I can reconnect with my Room 8 `Ohana, as well as my former students and their `Ohana.

Getting adjusted to the NEW Normal is going to take some time, but if we stay calm, focused, and responsible, we can get through this and move forward with new perspectives.

Please continue to check your personal email on a daily basis, as I will update you with incoming news from either my principal (Mrs. Watanabe), the D.O.E.,  and/or my Union, HSTA. 

As of now, the latest update about public schools is the closure lasting till April 30th.  This may be the date stated today, but it may change, so keep updated via trusted social media sites, press conferences, news, and/or email.

This classroom blog will specifically be used for student assignments and links.  If parents have questions regarding assignments or school, please continue to contact me via the school email address:  alena.wong@k12.hi.us

I will notify students and parents via email if there is a new assignment on the classroom blog.

A visit to the Hawaii Nature Center

Aloha Room 8 'Ohana:

     On our recent trip to the Hawaii Nature Center, our 2nd graders got to experience an adventure in NATURE!  They started the day off with an orientation presented by Ms. Kalei.  She questioned them about the different cycles in nature.  She had the students explain each cycle (gas, water, plant life, animal life, and nutrients) using props to help them decided. 

     Our adventure started off down by the Makiki Stream.  The students were able to do some net fishing.  They caught baby shrimp and fish!  It was a first experience for a lot of the students! :)
Next, we went for a hike in the valley and searched for decomposers, like worms, beetles, ants, and roly poly bugs!  NO Spiders or centipedes please?  Finally, we went on a scavenger hunt to build our class terrarium.  We collected things we found in nature, like leaves, seeds, branches, nut shells, rocks, and flowers, on our walk back to the buses. 

     It was an exciting day full of new discoveries and learning!  All in all we had a great day in nature!
